An open letter to ‪‎Bollywood‬ from a Pakistani:
We Pakistanis really appreciate the way Bollywood is trying to create peace between two nations but what really saddens us is the way Bollywood always tries to portray Pakistan as.I have just watched Salman Khan starrer 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' last night, apart from its excellent message which aims to reduce tensions between two nations, the thing which really matters is how Pakistan is always shown to masses through media.Pakistan is always shown as a village or a small dusty, sandy congested little area with all those crescent moon-star flag(somehow means its Pakistani) tied all over the walls and never the cites like Islamabad(was ranked the most beautiful capital in the world recently), Lahore or Karachi are shown which are highy developed and are as beautiful as any other city of a developed country. It's either that the directors of such films haven't visited Pakistan or maybe they purposely show the opressed, 'full of poverty' image of Pakistan. Trust me,Pakistan is heaven.Visit us and we will show you what Pakistan really is and what generousity means by definition. Later, whenever Pakistan is shown they don't miss out a chance to show maulanas wearing the religious caps running some kind of Jamaat.Ok! Definitely I'm not against Jamaats or preaching don't take me wrong but is that the only thing you like to show about Pakistan? Obviously not.Why not showing the modern, educated, stylish side of Pakistanis? Why does Bollywood always find only poor people of Pakistan living in slums or is it really hard to find the other side from the 200 million Pakistanis? Funny,eh? Oh! And which Pakistani says "Janab" after every sentence? Fine! It's not a bad thing at all ofcourse Janab isn't a bad word but if you're to show Pakistanis to masses show it the way they really are.I personally never heard a Pakistani saying 'Janab' after every sentence maybe my grandma(may she rest in peace). And then the big tummy army officers near the border! This was the most hilarious part of the movie.Trust me,the last time I checked the army officers near the border were all fit and smart as its the 'basic' for serving the army of your country but I guess Bollywood just meets the type of Pakistanis they want to show to masses, funny again? Maybe a coincidence.
Apart from all this, we really appreciate the way Bollywood is doing a fine job (like the Pakistani media is) to help bring the two countries together because everyone wants peace and prosperity. In Pakistan,we watch Bollywood films more than we watch our own films. You will find more Shahrukh fans in Pakistan than in India but when such image of Pakistan is shown to masses it really saddens us because that's not what we really are.I would full heartedly like to see Bollywood working on this to show the real side of anything they desire to make a film on.And yes,Bajrangi Bhaijaan is a worth watch. All respect to Kabir Ali, and Salman Khan.Hope it helps people realizing that we are one and humanity is what actually matters and we would love to see more films which are solely made to spread peace and love.
